What is Controlling Hazardous/Dangerous Goods Compliance Training?

Controlling Hazardous/Dangerous Goods Compliance Training is a specialized course that teaches workers how to safely handle, store, transport, and respond to incidents involving hazardous substances or dangerous goods. It’s a legal and safety requirement in industries where exposure to chemicals, flammable materials, or toxic substances is possible like logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, mining, healthcare, and agriculture.

Emergency procedures, including evacuation and cleanup, should be planned and understood by all employees. Emergency equipment like eye wash and shower stations should be accessible, clean, and tested regularly. Employees should be trained in first-aid skills and how to respond to injuries or chemical exposure.

Comprehensive Controlling Hazardous/Dangerous Goods Compliance Training

Controlling hazardous/dangerous goods compliance training is essential for employees who handle, package, store, or transport these materials. Such training covers various aspects including incident reporting, handling requirements, and regulatory compliance. Here are some key training options:

  • DOT HAZMAT Transportation Training: This online course meets DOT requirements for employees handling hazardous materials. It covers all necessary topics outlined in 172.704 Subpart H and applies to workers who respond to emergency situations involving hazardous materials.

  • IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) Courses: These courses are designed for aviation professionals and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements for transporting dangerous goods by air. They are based on the latest IATA Manuals and use a competency-based training and assessment (CBTA) approach.

  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Training: Offered by Global HazMat, this training is mandatory for all participants in Canada involved in the transportation of dangerous goods. It is available in various formats such as online, classroom, and self-study programs.

These training programs help ensure that all employees are competent to perform their job functions in compliance with relevant regulations and standards.

Importance of Hazardous Goods Training

Controlling hazardous/dangerous goods compliance training is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it ensures the safety of individuals, communities, and the environment by reducing the risk of accidents, spills, or other incidents during transportation. Proper training helps employees handle dangerous goods safely, minimizing the risk of accidents, injuries, and property damage.

Secondly, compliance training helps employers understand the potential hazards associated with certain materials and how to protect their employees from exposure. It also ensures that emergency responders are properly trained to deal with incidents involving dangerous goods.

Thirdly, compliance training is mandated by law to promote public safety. Federal inspectors have the authority to inspect any consignment involved in the movement of dangerous goods and ensure that all persons handling dangerous materials have received appropriate training.

Lastly, failing to comply with dangerous goods regulations can result in significant penalties, including fines.
Therefore, compliance training is essential for avoiding civil penalties and ensuring regulatory adherence.
