What is Maintaining Occupational Health, Safety and General Housekeeping Compliance Training?
Maintaining Occupational Health, Safety, and General Housekeeping Compliance Training is a type of workplace training program that focuses on ensuring employees understand and follow safety protocols, health standards, and cleanliness practices in the workplace.
Good housekeeping involves more than just general cleanliness, it builds a strong foundation to support hazard identification, risk assessment, and personal safety initiatives. Employers must establish and maintain good housekeeping practices to eliminate hazards to employees to the extent practicable. This includes eliminating slippery conditions, such as snow and ice, on walkways and working surfaces as necessary.
Comprehensive Maintaining Occupational Health, Safety and General Housekeeping Compliance Training
Several organizations in South Africa offer comprehensive training for maintaining occupational health, safety, and general housekeeping compliance. HRETD, for instance, provides a training program accredited with the Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) and the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) unit standard 8016. This program equips learners with the necessary skills to maintain occupational health, safety, and general housekeeping based on statutory and industry requirements
Absolute Health also provides health and safety training courses that are accredited and recognized by various statutory bodies such as the Health and Welfare Sectional Education Training Authority (HWSETA), Department of Labour, Resuscitation Council of South Africa (RCSA), and the American Emergency Care and Safety Institute (ECSI).
Important of Maintaining Occupational Health, Safety and General Housekeeping Compliance Training
Maintaining occupational health, safety, and general housekeeping compliance training is crucial in South Africa for several reasons. Firstly, it ensures a safe and healthy working environment for employees and others, which is a legal requirement under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act) 85 of 1993. Compliance with the OHS Act can also enhance a business’s reputation, making it easier to attract clients and retain employees.
Secondly, good housekeeping practices are essential for preventing accidents and injuries, which can lead to business interruptions and liability claims.
For instance, keeping building surrounds clear of vegetation and ensuring proper training in fire-fighting can mitigate fire risks. Additionally, ensuring that electrical reticulation is in good condition and obtaining the required certificates of compliance can prevent electrical faults that are a primary reason for fires in South Africa.
Thirdly, compliance training helps businesses stay updated on all health and safety regulations and standards, ensuring they meet regulatory requirements and reduce the risk of penalties for non-compliance. Non-compliance can result in severe penalties, including fines of up to R1 million or up to 10 years in jail for business owners or directors.
Lastly, compliance training fosters a positive health and safety culture within companies, making sure all employees understand their responsibilities and the importance of adhering to safety protocols. This not only protects the business but also its employees and customers, ensuring a safer and healthier working environment.
